As schools prepare for the implementation of the Three-Term School Calendar for SY 2026–2027, the administration of Diagnostic / Pre-Tests for Key Stages 1–3 becomes an essential part of the opening school activities.
These assessments help teachers determine learners’ readiness, identify learning gaps, and measure prior knowledge before formal instruction begins. More importantly, diagnostic tests support learner-centered instruction by guiding teachers in planning effective lessons and interventions.
The assessment covers:
- Key Stage 1 (Grades 1-3)
- Key Stage 2 (Grades 4–6)
- Key Stage 3 (Grades 7–10)
across all major learning areas.
What is a Diagnostic / Pre-Test?
A diagnostic test or pre-test is an assessment administered before the start of regular classroom instruction. Its main purpose is to evaluate learners’ existing knowledge and competencies from previous grade levels.
Unlike graded examinations, diagnostic assessments are used to:
- Monitor learner readiness
- Identify strengths and weaknesses
- Guide instructional planning
- Develop intervention programs
- Improve teaching strategies
As a result, schools can provide more responsive and effective instruction throughout the school year.
