The Department of Education (DepEd) continues to address learning gaps through the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) Program, a nationwide initiative designed to improve literacy among Filipino learners.
Anchored on the ARAL Act of 2024, the program provides structured reading interventions across Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2, and Key Stage 3, ensuring a progressive development of reading skills—from basic phonics to full comprehension and independent reading.
What is the ARAL Reading Program?
The ARAL Reading Program is a free learning recovery initiative that helps students who struggle with reading reach grade-level competencies. It uses teacher-guided lessons, interactive activities, and structured materials to rebuild literacy skills step by step.
Each Key Stage is designed to target specific learning needs:
- Key Stage 1 – Foundational reading skills
- Key Stage 2 – Reading fluency and comprehension
- Key Stage 3 – Advanced reading and functional literacy
Key Stage 1: Building the Foundation of Reading
Key Stage 1 focuses on early literacy development, helping learners recognize letters and understand basic sounds.
Key Learning Areas:
- Alphabet recognition and phonics
- Letter-sound association
- Word and syllable formation
- Basic reading comprehension
Teachers use songs, repetition, flashcards, and guided practice to make learning engaging. This stage ensures that learners can identify, read, and understand simple words and sentences.
Outcome: Learners develop basic reading skills and confidence
Key Stage 2: Strengthening Fluency and Understanding
Key Stage 2 builds on foundational skills by improving reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Key Learning Areas:
- Word recognition and sentence reading
- Short story comprehension
- Vocabulary development
- Introduction to parts of speech
Students engage in story-based learning, group activities, and reading exercises to enhance understanding. They begin to analyze simple texts and express ideas clearly.
Outcome: Learners transition from decoding words to understanding meaning
Key Stage 3: Advancing Toward Independent Reading
Key Stage 3 represents a critical stage where learners develop functional literacy and independent reading skills.
Key Learning Areas:
- Advanced phonics and word decoding
- Sentence construction and grammar
- Use of sight words (e.g., Ang, Mga, Sa, Ito, Ay)
- Reading comprehension and critical thinking
Learners practice sound manipulation, word formation, and text analysis through structured lessons and interactive activities.
