A Strong Start Matters
The first days of school often shape a learner's attitude, motivation, and confidence for the rest of the academic year. Recognizing this, the Department of Education (DepEd) continues to implement Opening Block Activities for learners from Grades 1 to 10 as part of the opening of School Year 2026–2027.
More than a simple orientation, the Opening Block is a carefully designed transition program that helps learners reconnect with school, build positive relationships, establish routines, and prepare themselves for the learning journey ahead.
Across all grade levels, the program focuses on one common goal: helping every learner feel welcomed, supported, and ready to succeed.
Building Foundations in the Early Grades
For learners in Key Stage 1 (Grades 1–3), the Opening Block centers on creating a safe and happy classroom environment.
Young learners participate in activities that help them:
- Meet their classmates and teachers
- Learn classroom routines and expectations
- Express their emotions appropriately
- Develop positive behavior and social skills
- Build confidence in speaking and participating
- Strengthen early literacy and numeracy readiness
Through songs, games, storytelling, role-playing, drawing activities, and classroom helper tasks, learners gradually become comfortable in their new learning environment.
At this stage, the focus is not only on academic readiness but also on helping children develop a sense of belonging and security in school.
Developing Responsibility and Leadership
As learners move into Key Stage 2 (Grades 4–6), the Opening Block shifts toward greater independence and responsibility.
Activities encourage learners to:
- Reflect on their strengths and aspirations
- Understand academic expectations
- Explore school policies and values
- Develop leadership and teamwork skills
- Set personal and academic goals
- Strengthen organizational habits
Learners begin taking a more active role in their own learning by participating in discussions, collaborative projects, classroom agreements, and goal-setting activities.
Grade 6 learners, in particular, are challenged to embrace their role as leaders and role models as they prepare for the transition to Junior High School.
Preparing Future-Ready Junior High School Learners
For Key Stage 3 (Grades 7–10), the Opening Block becomes more focused on personal growth, academic success, leadership, and future planning.
Learners engage in meaningful discussions and activities related to:
- Self-awareness and emotional well-being
- Study habits and time management
- Academic expectations and learner accountability
- Digital citizenship and online safety
- Leadership and ethical decision-making
- SMART goal-setting
- Career awareness and future readiness
Grade 7 learners are guided through the transition to secondary education, while Grade 8 learners strengthen their independence and organizational skills.
In Grade 9, learners begin connecting their interests, strengths, and values to potential career pathways. By Grade 10, learners are introduced to Senior High School tracks and are encouraged to make informed decisions about their future educational and career goals.
These experiences help learners become more purposeful, responsible, and prepared for life beyond Junior High School.
More Than Academics
One of the defining features of the Opening Block is its emphasis on holistic learner development.
Throughout the week, learners are encouraged to discuss their emotions, identify support systems, build positive relationships, and develop healthy coping strategies.
Topics such as mental well-being, anti-bullying, child protection, responsible technology use, and positive citizenship are integrated into various activities, helping learners develop important life skills alongside academic readiness.
The program recognizes that learners perform best when they feel safe, connected, and valued.
Supporting Teachers Through Baseline Assessment
Another key component of the Opening Block is the administration of the Beginning of School Year (BOSY) Assessments.
These assessments provide teachers with valuable baseline information regarding learners' literacy, numeracy, and developmental competencies.
The results help educators:
- Identify learning strengths and needs
- Plan appropriate interventions
- Adjust instructional strategies
- Provide targeted learner support
By understanding where learners are at the start of the year, teachers can make more informed decisions that improve learning outcomes.
Creating Classrooms Where Learners Thrive
The Opening Block is ultimately about building strong classroom communities.
Whether learners are creating a Grade 1 class poster, developing a Grade 6 class mission, writing a Grade 9 class vision, or establishing a Grade 10 leadership commitment, they are learning an important lesson: success is not achieved alone.
Through collaboration, respect, responsibility, and shared goals, learners begin the school year with a sense of ownership and belonging.
Starting the Year with Purpose
The DepEd Opening Block Activities for School Year 2026–2027 demonstrate the Department's commitment to nurturing learners academically, socially, emotionally, and personally.
By dedicating time to relationship-building, self-discovery, leadership development, goal-setting, and future planning, schools create a strong foundation for meaningful learning throughout the year.
As classes begin nationwide, the Opening Block reminds learners that every new school year is an opportunity—not just to learn new lessons, but to become better versions of themselves.
