As School Year 2026–2027 officially begins, the Department of Education (DepEd) is implementing Opening Block Activities for Key Stage 2 learners (Grades 4–6) to help pupils transition smoothly into a new academic year.
Designed to foster learner well-being, strengthen classroom communities, and establish positive learning habits, the Opening Block provides learners with meaningful opportunities to build confidence, develop leadership skills, set goals, and prepare themselves for the academic challenges ahead.
For upper elementary learners, the Opening Block serves as a crucial period for establishing routines, understanding expectations, and cultivating the values needed for lifelong learning and success.
What Is the DepEd Opening Block?
The Opening Block is a structured week-long program conducted during the first days of school before the start of regular classroom instruction.
Rather than immediately focusing on academic lessons, teachers guide learners through engaging activities that emphasize:
- Social and emotional well-being
- Classroom orientation and expectations
- School rules and policies
- Leadership and responsibility
- Academic readiness
- Goal-setting and future planning
- Community building and collaboration
These activities help learners develop a positive mindset and prepare them for a productive school year.
Grade 4: Building Strong Foundations for Success
Grade 4 learners begin the week by reflecting on their emotions, expectations, and readiness for learning.
Activities focus on developing core values such as:
- Respect
- Responsibility
- Cooperation
Learners also become familiar with their learning areas, classroom expectations, school policies, and schedules. Through role-playing, poster-making, and collaborative discussions, they explore topics such as anti-bullying, honesty, kindness, and school safety.
A major highlight of the Grade 4 Opening Block is goal-setting, where learners identify academic, behavioral, and personal goals while involving parents and guardians as partners in their educational journey.
The week concludes with portfolio organization, class agreement signing, and the creation of a shared Grade 4 class identity.
Grade 5: Developing Leadership and Growth Mindset
The Grade 5 Opening Block introduces learners to the responsibilities that come with becoming more independent and academically engaged.
Learners participate in activities centered on four important values:
- Responsibility
- Respect
- Perseverance
- Growth Mindset
Throughout the week, learners explore academic expectations, learning areas, school policies, and leadership roles. Interactive activities encourage them to think critically about decision-making, social responsibility, and positive behavior.
One of the key features of the Grade 5 Opening Block is SMART Goal Setting, where learners create specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals for the school year. Learners also develop action plans and write letters to parents or guardians to strengthen home-school partnerships.
The week culminates in the creation of a Grade 5 class vision, slogan, and affirmation that promote unity and motivation.
Grade 6: Preparing for Leadership and Junior High School
As the senior learners of elementary school, Grade 6 pupils are encouraged to embrace leadership, responsibility, and future readiness.
The Opening Block focuses on helping learners:
- Reflect on their strengths and achievements
- Assess their emotional readiness
- Understand academic expectations
- Develop leadership skills
- Learn about rights and responsibilities
- Set SMART goals
- Prepare for Junior High School
Through scenario-based discussions, leadership activities, advocacy projects, and goal-planning exercises, learners gain a deeper understanding of how their actions today can influence their future success.
Grade 6 learners also create a class vision, mission, slogan, and agreement that reflect their shared commitment to excellence and positive citizenship.
Beginning of School Year Assessments
Integrated throughout the Opening Block Week is the administration of the Beginning of School Year (BOSY) Assessments.
These assessments provide teachers with valuable baseline information regarding learners' literacy, numeracy, and developmental competencies. The results help educators identify learning needs, design interventions, and plan instruction that meets the diverse needs of learners.
