A number of institutions in and around Metro Manila have confirmed that they will suspend classes on February 25, 2026 in observance of the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, one of the most pivotal moments in modern Philippine history.
Despite Malacañang’s declaration of February 25 as a special working day, several schools said they are opting to pause academic activities—and, in some cases, campus operations—to give their communities the opportunity to take part in anniversary events, memorial programs, and civic gatherings.
The 1986 uprising, widely known as the People Power Revolution, drew millions of Filipinos to Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in a series of largely peaceful protests that resulted in the fall of President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., the father of current President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. The four-day movement is credited with restoring democratic rule and elevating Corazon Aquino, widow of the late opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., to the presidency.
As of writing this article, the following schools have confirmed suspensions or special holidays on February 25:
- Ateneo de Manila University
- De La Salle Philippines
- University of Santo Tomas (UST)
- University of the East (UE)
- Colegio de San Juan de Letran
- Mapúa University
- Adamson University
- Miriam College
School administrators said the suspensions are meant not only to decongest campuses during commemorations but also to underscore the historical significance of the 1986 uprising, particularly for younger generations who did not witness it firsthand.
More schools and local governments are expected to release advisories in the coming days as the 40th anniversary approaches. Students and parents are advised to monitor official announcements from their respective institutions for updates.
