QUEZON PROVINCE, Philippines — The national government has declared November 4, 2025 (Tuesday) a special non-working holiday in Quezon Province under Proclamation No. 1051, to commemorate the death anniversary of Apolinario dela Cruz, more widely known as Hermano Puli.
Apolinario dela Cruz, or Hermano Puli, is recognized as one of the country’s early heroes who fought for religious freedom and equality during the Spanish colonial period. Born in Lucban, Tayabas (now Quezon), he led the Cofradía de San José, a religious movement that sought to allow Filipino laymen to participate in church life — a right then reserved for Spaniards and mestizos.
His movement was eventually seen as a threat by Spanish authorities, leading to a brutal crackdown in 1841. Hermano Puli was captured and executed on November 4, 1841, in Tayabas, making him a symbol of courage and the struggle against oppression.
In honor of his heroism and legacy, the province annually observes this date as a local holiday, allowing residents to participate in commemorative rites and educational activities that celebrate Quezon’s rich historical heritage.
