As of May 2025, the Department of Education (DepEd) is preparing to implement the ₱7,000 annual medical allowance for public school teachers and eligible government employees, as mandated by Executive Order No. 64, s. 2024. This allowance, a significant increase from the previous ₱500, is intended to subsidize Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)-type benefits, enhancing healthcare support for educators.
However, the Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC) has expressed concerns over potential delays in the disbursement of this benefit. They have formally appealed to DepEd to expedite the release of the allowance, suggesting a cash distribution to address immediate medical needs, especially as teachers are required to undergo compulsory medical examinations before the school year ends.
DepEd has yet to release specific guidelines on the distribution mechanism. While the long-term plan involves HMO-based coverage, the TDC emphasizes the urgency of providing immediate support to educators. They also advocate for the swift selection of a reputable HMO provider to ensure comprehensive and sustainable healthcare services for teachers.
