DepEd seeks more career opportunities for teachers in creating new teaching positions

Committed to provide career and financial stability among teachers, the Department of Education (DepEd) is continuously working with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and Civil Service Commission (CSC) in revising the Career Progression System for Public School Teachers.

“We are continuously finding ways to give our teachers the necessary benefits and assistance they should be receiving with or without the pandemic. We are committed to help them, especially in these trying times,” Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said.

Should it be approved, the teaching career line will have items for Teacher IV, V, VI, VII, and Master Teacher V.

The career progression reform initiative seeks to ensure more opportunities for career movement, professional growth, and, eventually, financial stability for high-performing and deserving teachers.

Meanwhile, Undersecretary for Finance Annalyn Sevilla said that the Department is already processing the second tranche of the salary increase for its teaching and non-teaching personnel, in line with the Salary Standardization Law, signed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in 2019.

“Taon-taon po ay natatanggap natin ang salary increase. Ang tawag po natin dito ay Salary Standardization Law. Nagsimula po ito sa administration ng ating Pangulo, tinuloy-tuloy po nila ito, kasama ang mga teachers,” said Undersecretary Sevilla during the EdukAksyon Virtual Visit and Press Conference in Region 9 on April 20.

“It’s not just for teachers but all of us in the government will have that salary increase. It is already in our budget proposal. It is already in our projections at lahat po ito ay ating pinaghahandaan,” she added.

In 2020, the salary of a Master Teacher I (SG-18) increased by 3.75% amounting to P1,522, from P40,637 to P42,159. By the fourth tranche of the SSL V in 2023, the salary for Master Teacher I will be P46,725.

Meanwhile, the Master Teacher III and Master Teacher IV positions were created in 2010 and 2012, respectively. From P39,768 under SG 20 in 2016, the basic monthly salary of a Master Teacher III increased to P54,251 in 2021. A Master Teacher IV under SG 21 now receives P60,901 from P43,439 in 2016.
