In a statement, Tinio emphasized that a simple “thank you” is not enough for the country’s modern-day heroes. He said teachers need higher salaries and better benefits—not additional workloads.
“Hindi sapat na puro THANK YOU lamang ang ibinibigay ng gobyerno sa ating mga modern day heroes. Ang kailangan ng mga guro ay dagdag sweldo at benepisyo, hindi dagdag trabaho!” ani Tinio.
The lawmaker highlighted the following demands for teachers:
- Higher salaries, with a proposed increase to ₱50,000;
- A ₱5,000 monthly P.E.R.A. for teachers; and
- Additional funding for teachers’ promotions.
Tinio said teachers are honored every year during National Teachers’ Day for their dedication, sacrifices, and commitment to their students. However, he stressed that appreciation should not end with words alone.
“Hindi sapat na kilalanin lamang bilang modern-day heroes ang mga guro. Kulang ang salita. Dapat merong gawa. Dapat itong ipadama sa kanila. Hindi masasabi ng bayan ang tunay na natin sa mga guro kung nananatili silang overworked, underpaid, at ngayon, tinatawag pa na underloaded at excess ang maraming mga teachers natin.”
According to Tinio, teachers continue to face difficult working conditions while performing responsibilities beyond classroom instruction. Despite these challenges, they remain committed to serving learners and contributing to the nation’s development.
For the ACT Teachers Party-list, genuine appreciation for teachers must be reflected in concrete policies, adequate compensation, improved benefits, and better working conditions.
Rather than continuously adding responsibilities to teachers, the group urged the government to provide them with fair salaries, sufficient support, and meaningful opportunities for professional growth.
