The rollout of the Opening Block under DepEd Order No. 9, s. 2026 introduces a structured yet flexible start to the school year across all grade levels. For Key Stage 2 (Grades 4–6), the Daily Lesson Log (DLL) during this period plays a critical role in bridging the transition from foundational learning to more independent, structured, and academically demanding tasks.
At this stage, learners are expected to demonstrate greater responsibility, improved communication skills, and emerging critical thinking abilities. The Opening Block DLL is designed to support these expectations while still prioritizing adjustment, readiness, and learner well-being.
Understanding the Role of the Opening Block in Key Stage 2
Unlike the early grades, learners in Grades 4–6 are no longer new to formal schooling. However, they face increased academic expectations, more complex subject matter, and greater accountability. The Opening Block serves as a recalibration phase, allowing both teachers and learners to align expectations before diving into full academic instruction.
The DLL during this phase focuses on:
- Reinforcing classroom systems and procedures
- Clarifying academic expectations across subjects
- Promoting values formation and responsible behavior
- Encouraging goal setting and self-management
- Building a collaborative classroom environment
Why the Opening Block Matters for Grades 4–6
1. Strengthening Learner Responsibility
At this level, learners begin to take ownership of their learning. The DLL integrates activities that encourage accountability, organization, and task completion.
2. Aligning Academic Expectations
Grades 4–6 introduce more formal academic demands. The Opening Block allows teachers to clearly communicate standards, outputs, and classroom expectations.
3. Developing Social and Leadership Skills
Learners are capable of deeper interaction and collaboration. Activities focus on teamwork, leadership roles, and respectful communication.
4. Supporting Emotional and Behavioral Readiness
Even older elementary learners benefit from structured opportunities to express feelings, build confidence, and adjust to new environments.
