Understanding the Three-Term School Calendar in Basic Education

The proposed three-term school calendar is a structural reform meant to change not just the sequence of school dates, but the way time is protected and used in basic education. Rather than treating the school year as a long, continuous stretch occasionally interrupted by administrative demands and co-curricular events, the policy reorganizes the year into clearer, more deliberate blocks. Its central logic is simple: protect teaching time, reduce avoidable disruptions, and create a more manageable rhythm for learners, teachers, and schools.

At the core of the policy is the retention of the same legal school-year framework under Republic Act No. 11480. The school year still consists of not more than 220 days and must begin no earlier than the first Monday of June and no later than the last day of August. What changes is the internal design of that year. Instead of one long cycle, the school year is divided into three terms, each organized around three distinct blocks: the Opening Block, the Instructional Block, and the End-of-Term Block. According to the briefer, implementation will begin in School Year 2026–2027, with each term containing roughly 65 to 69 days of engaged teaching-learning activities, excluding weekends and legal holidays.
