DepEd Begins Distribution of Newly Designed Chairs and Tables to Schools

The Department of Education (DepEd) has started distributing newly designed chairs and tables to schools as part of its continuing effort to provide learners with quality, inclusive, and comfortable classroom furniture.

According to DepEd, three types of chairs and tables are now being delivered to schools. These come in different material combinations: plastic and steel, wood and steel, and engineered bamboo and steel.

Wood and Steel
  • Made with care and compassion, this design is manufactured by persons with disabilities (PWDs).
  • Pursuant to RA 7277 or the Magna Carta for PWDs, which encourages the government to procure from PWD organizations and cooperatives.

Plastic and Steel
  • Waterproof, does not rot, and is not eaten by termites.

Engineered Bamboo and Steel
  • Often stronger than wood.
  • Sustainable and eco-friendly, with no need to cut trees.
  • Support for local bamboo farmers.
  • Pursuant to Executive Order No. 879, s. 2010, which promotes the local bamboo industry.

The distribution follows Republic Act No. 11394, or the Neutral Desk Act, which requires separate tables and chairs instead of the traditional armchair design. This setup is intended to ensure comfort and fair use for all learners, whether they are left-handed or right-handed.

The initiative also supports Republic Act No. 7277, or the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities, by giving priority to the procurement of wooden tables and chairs made by persons with disabilities (PWDs). This step highlights the government’s commitment to promoting inclusivity while supporting livelihood opportunities for PWDs.

In addition, the use of engineered bamboo in some of the furniture designs is aligned with Executive Order No. 879, s. 2010, which encourages the use of bamboo as a sustainable material in furniture production.

Through this initiative, DepEd continues to deliver quality and inclusive learning equipment to schools, helping create a more comfortable and effective learning environment for students. The effort is being carried out under the leadership of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., as part of the administration’s broader commitment to improving education in the country.
