MALACAÑANG CLARIFIES: FEBRUARY 18, 2026 IS NOT A HOLIDAY

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang has clarified that February 18, 2026 (Wednesday) has not been declared a holiday in the Philippines, despite public speculation linking the date to the expected start of Ramadan.

Presidential Press Officer Claire Castro said the Palace issued the clarification after misinformation circulated online suggesting that February 18 would be a non-working day. While the beginning of Ramadan is an important religious observance for Filipino Muslims, it does not automatically become a public holiday unless formally declared by the President through a proclamation.

The government reminded the public that only dates explicitly listed in official proclamations or subsequently declared by Malacañang are considered holidays. In this case, no proclamation has been issued declaring February 18, 2026, a holiday, and regular work and classes are expected to proceed.

FEBRUARY 17, 2026: CHINESE NEW YEAR IS A HOLIDAY

In contrast, Tuesday, February 17, 2026, is officially declared a Special Non-Working Day nationwide in observance of Chinese New Year. This means many offices, schools, and businesses may suspend operations or follow special holiday schedules, in accordance with labor and government guidelines.

Authorities have also reminded the public to plan ahead for travel and work arrangements around this date, as Chinese New Year is traditionally marked by increased movement of people and commercial activity in many parts of the country.

REMAINING SPECIAL NON-WORKING DAYS IN FEBRUARY 2026 (LOCAL DECLARATIONS)

Aside from Chinese New Year, several local special non-working days have been declared in specific provinces, cities, and towns in February 2026 to mark local anniversaries and celebrations:
  • February 21 – Marinduque, via Proclamation No. 1130, s. 2026
  • February 23 – Baguio City, via Proclamation No. 1125, s. 2026

  • February 28 – Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, via Proclamation No. 1146, s. 2026

These local holidays apply only to the specified areas and are usually declared to allow residents to fully participate in local foundation days, festivals, or historical commemorations.
