Several areas declare class suspensions Monday, January 5, due to shear line

MANILA, Philippines — Classes were suspended in several localities on Monday, January 5, as persistent rainfall continued to affect parts of the country due to the shear line, according to local authorities.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that the shear line is influencing weather conditions over portions of the Bicol Region and the Visayas, resulting in cloudy skies and periods of rain.

In response, a number of local government units announced class suspensions to ensure the safety of students and school personnel.

As of posting time, the following areas have announced class suspensions or shifts in learning modalities:

Eastern Visayas
  • Tacloban City — all levels, public and private
  • Northern Samar — all levels, public and private
  • Tanauan, Leyte — all levels, public and private
  • Babatngon, Leyte — all levels, public and private
  • Palo, Leyte — all levels, public and private
  • Catbalogan City, Samar — all levels, public and private
  • Caibiran, Biliran — all levels, public schools only

Bicol Region
  • Caramoan, Camarines Sur — all levels, public and private (shift to modular learning)

Central Visayas
  • Tabogon, Cebu — all levels, public and private (shift to modular learning)
