The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has proposed a P2,000 increase in the honorarium for teachers serving as poll workers in its budget plan for 2025.
Following a discussion with Comelec Chairman George Garcia, Tinio shared insights into the talks, which addressed the compensation, benefits, and security concerns of teachers. The dialogue also highlighted the teachers' group's request for a system to cover their legal and medical expenses.
Tinio urged Congress to reinstate the P14 billion that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) removed from Comelec’s budget. He emphasized that restoring these funds would enable teachers to receive extra transportation allowances on election day.
ACT Teachers holds a seat in the House of Representatives, with Tinio, a former party-list representative, being the first nominee for the 2025 elections.
“Ang positive dito ay regarding honorarium. may P2,000 increase na madadagdag dito. Kailangan pa ilaban, particularly, nasa Senate ang budget ngayon, na possibly may another P1,000 na maidagdag pa as transportation allowance on the day of election. So itutulak natin 'yan especially during the Senate deliberation and the bicam," Tinio stated.
He also mentioned that teachers will now receive 10 days of service credit for their roles as poll workers, an improvement from the previous five days, which he described as a significant advancement.
