The Ready-Made Second Summative Tests for Key Stage 1 were developed to assist teachers in evaluating the learning progress of pupils in Grades 1 to 3. These assessment materials focus on the learning competencies taught during Weeks 4 to 6 of the Term 1 Instructional Block and are aligned with the prescribed Budget of Works.
After several weeks of classroom discussions, guided activities, practice exercises, and performance tasks, teachers need appropriate assessment tools to determine how well learners have understood the lessons. These ready-made tests provide a practical starting point for gathering evidence of learning and identifying the competencies that may require further reinforcement.
Under the implementation of the Three-Term School Calendar and the revised classroom assessment guidelines, assessment materials must remain aligned with the curriculum, suitable for the learners’ grade level, and responsive to their actual classroom experiences. DepEd Order No. 15, s. 2026, or the Revised Guidelines on Classroom Assessment, Grading System, and Awards and Recognition for the K to 12 Basic Education Program, provides guidance on conducting assessments under the revised curriculum and school calendar.
For learners in Grades 1 to 3, summative assessments should be manageable, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate. Young children should not be subjected to excessively long, difficult, or stressful examinations. Assessment activities must instead provide simple and age-appropriate opportunities for learners to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding, and developing skills.
The recommended number and forms of assessment should also be treated as flexible guides rather than rigid requirements. Learners in the early grades are still developing essential skills in reading, writing, numeracy, communication, and self-expression. Teachers must therefore consider their learners’ attention span, reading ability, language proficiency, readiness level, and previous classroom experiences when preparing or administering a test.
These ready-made Second Summative Tests may help reduce teachers’ preparation time by providing sample questions and organized assessment materials based on the competencies covered during Weeks 4 to 6. However, they should not replace the teacher’s professional judgment. Teachers retain full authority to revise, shorten, simplify, contextualize, or reorganize the tests according to the needs of their classes.
Directions may be translated or simplified, illustrations may be added, and test items may be replaced when they do not correspond with the lessons actually taught. Teachers may also adjust the number of questions or use alternative forms of assessment when these are more appropriate for their learners. Since every classroom is different, an assessment that works well for one group may require modification for another.
These materials should therefore be regarded as instructional support resources, not fixed or mandatory examinations. Their purpose is to make assessment preparation more efficient while supporting fair, appropriate, and learner-centered classroom practices.
Most importantly, summative assessment in Key Stage 1 should not create unnecessary fear or pressure among young learners. It should be clear enough for children to understand and meaningful enough to show what they have learned. The results should be used not only for recording grades but also for identifying learning gaps, improving instruction, and planning suitable remediation or enrichment activities.
