The Department of Education (DepEd) has introduced updated guidelines on classroom assessment, grading, and learner recognition under the MATATAG Curriculum.

Here are some of the key changes:

Key Stage 1 (Grades 1–3) will use a descriptive grading system focused on learner development rather than numerical grades.

Assessment and grading place greater emphasis on continuous learning, feedback, intervention, and performance-based tasks.

Academic awards for Key Stage 1 learners will no longer be given to reduce early competition and allow children to focus on growth and learning.

For Key Stages 2–4 (Grades 4–12), learners may still receive academic recognition based on prescribed standards, but awardees will be listed alphabetically instead of by rank.

✅ Recognition now highlights not only academic achievement but also responsibility, positive behavior, and balanced learner development.

✅ Schools are encouraged to provide timely interventions and support for learners who need additional academic assistance.

The updated policy reflects DepEd's commitment to a more learner-centered, inclusive, and holistic approach to education—one that values growth, character, and meaningful learning experiences alongside academic excellence.
