DepEd Welcomes Returning OFW Teachers Back to Philippine Schools

The Department of Education (DepEd) has reaffirmed its support for overseas Filipino teachers who are returning to the Philippines due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Through its reintegration efforts, the agency is opening opportunities for displaced educators to continue their profession in the country and begin a new chapter of service in the public school system. DepEd said this move is part of its broader commitment to assist Filipino teachers affected by the crisis and help them transition back into local employment.

At the center of this initiative is the Sa Pinas, Ikaw ang Ma’am at Sir (SPIMS) Program, a reintegration pathway created for licensed OFW teachers who wish to return to teaching in the Philippines. Under the program, qualified applicants may apply for permanent Teacher I positions in public schools, subject to existing hiring guidelines and qualification standards. DepEd has described SPIMS as a coordinated effort with partner government agencies to make the return of OFW teachers more organized and supportive.

DepEd also highlighted that the program is not only about employment but also about helping returning teachers and their families rebuild stability after working abroad. Recent reports said the agency has been accelerating reintegration support as more teachers are affected by the Middle East tensions. Since 2014, SPIMS has helped 11,056 licensed teachers transition from overseas work into the Philippine public school system, while thousands have also received financial aid and refresher training under the program.

With this effort, DepEd is sending a clear message that returning OFW teachers are welcome and valued in the Philippine education sector. By providing access to teaching positions, reintegration assistance, and support services, the department aims to ease the transition of educators coming home from difficult circumstances abroad. The initiative reflects both recognition of their experience and a practical response to help them continue serving Filipino learners back in the country.
