GSIS to Grant College Scholarships to 1,000 Children of Active Members Starting 2026

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is set to launch a new scholarship initiative aimed at supporting students pursuing degrees in science and technology fields, with grants to be awarded to 1,000 incoming college freshmen beginning Academic Year (AY) 2026–2027.

Under the GSIS Subsidy for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (GSSP), selected scholars will receive financial assistance to help cover educational expenses as part of the government’s broader push to strengthen economic competitiveness through education.

The initiative aligns with the economic agenda of Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who has repeatedly emphasized the importance of advancing STEM education to prepare the country for future economic challenges. The President has stressed that innovation and agility will be essential for national growth in the coming years.

“Our program is a direct response to the President’s call for a technologically proficient workforce,” said GSIS President and General Manager Wick Veloso. “By supporting the education of these young minds, we are building a pipeline of talent that will drive innovation and secure our nation’s economic future.”

Each grantee will receive an annual subsidy of ₱15,000, amounting to ₱15 million per batch per year. The program will run for four academic years, from AY 2026 to 2030, and is expected to support a total of 4,000 students. The total budget allocation for the program is projected to reach ₱240 million by 2034.

The scholarship will be open to children of active GSIS members as well as permanent total disability pensioners below 60 years old. To promote inclusivity, GSIS said that 200 of the 1,000 annual slots will be reserved for children of persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and solo parents.

Priority will be given to applicants whose parents fall under lower salary grades—specifically Salary Grade 15 and below—or who receive lower pension amounts. Eligible nominees must be incoming first-year college students accepted into a STEM course offered by a Philippine higher education institution recognized by the Commission on Higher Education. Applicants must also have obtained a senior high school general weighted average (GWA) of at least 90 percent.

GSIS noted that it has been providing educational assistance to dependents of its active members since 1998. Over the years, nearly 28,000 grantees have benefited from GSIS scholarships and educational subsidies, with total funding reaching ₱836 million.

The agency said the shift toward a STEM-focused subsidy program reflects the country’s need to develop a skilled workforce capable of driving innovation and sustaining long-term economic growth.
