DepEd Sets New Policy: Automatic Shift to Home-Based Learning Under Typhoon Signal No. 2

To reduce disruptions to students’ education during typhoon season, Education Secretary Sonny Angara has announced that the Department of Education (DepEd) will roll out a new policy mandating an immediate transition to alternative learning methods whenever Typhoon Signal No. 2 is declared.

Angara shared this update following the 39th Executive Committee (Execom) meeting of DepEd, highlighting that the rising frequency of class suspensions due to heavy rains prompted the department to enhance its learning continuity strategies.

“With the increasing suspension of classes brought by the rainy season, it was agreed during the recent Execom meeting to implement a learning continuity plan whenever in-person classes are suspended,” Angara posted on Facebook.

The Education Secretary also cited the recommendations of the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2), which called for an update to current class suspension protocols to address the escalating challenges posed by climate change.

“Under this new directive, the declaration of Typhoon Signal No. 2 will automatically trigger a shift to home-based alternative learning,” Angara said, ensuring that educational activities can continue safely despite adverse weather conditions.
