MANILA, Philippines — Following widespread class suspensions due to recent cyclones and monsoon rains, the Department of Education (DepEd) is offering schools a range of flexible options to conduct make-up classes and recover lost instructional time.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara announced that the implementation of make-up classes will not follow a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, schools are encouraged to choose methods that work best for their teachers and students.
“Pwedeng dagdag lang na oras sa weekdays, pwede rin gawin sa Sabado,” Angara said during the launch of the Quality Basic Education Development Plan in Quezon City. “Depende rin 'yan. Titingnan din natin iyong schedule ng mga teachers dahil gusto natin na nagpapahinga din iyong ating mga teachers.”
Flexible Make-Up Options May Include:
-
Extended class hours on weekdays
-
Holding classes on Saturdays
DepEd stressed that the make-up plans will be decentralized, giving school heads and local officials the freedom to adjust based on their community’s capacity and needs.
The department also emphasized that any make-up efforts must be mindful of both student learning needs and teacher workloads, especially following weeks of severe weather and disruption.
While most schools have resumed operations, some areas in Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, and the Cordillera Administrative Region remained closed as of Tuesday due to ongoing effects of the southwest monsoon.
DepEd said it will continue coordinating with local government units to ensure that academic recovery efforts are safe, practical, and effective for all stakeholders.
