Teachers across the Philippines are praising the Department of Education (DepEd) after a 57% reduction in their workload under the leadership of Education Secretary Sonny Angara, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive.
According to Teacher Mark Anthony Asis from Camarines Norte, the change allows educators to focus more on teaching and guiding students instead of being buried in paperwork. “I now have more time to prepare lessons and provide better feedback to my students,” he said.
Public school teachers nationwide are feeling relief from non-teaching tasks that once distracted them from the classroom. Thanks to DepEd Order No. 06, s. 2025, the required forms have been cut from 174 to just 5 essential ones. Additional forms—31 for extra duties and 39 for teaching-related assignments—are assigned based on roles per DepEd Order No. 005, s. 2024.
“We’re clearing the runway so teachers can fly,” said Sec. Angara. “We’re giving teachers the time and energy to do what they do best—teach. When we lighten their load, students learn better.”
In Iloilo City, Teacher Jenalyn Trance of Graciano Lopez Jaena Elementary School sees stronger teamwork and more time for sharing best practices. Teachers are also more active in training and workshops.
Teacher Katherine Fajardo Santamaria from Camarines Sur National High School added, “With fewer forms, we can be more innovative and flexible in our teaching methods.”
Instead of being bogged down by paperwork, teachers are now reclaiming their time—for lesson planning, collaboration, and most importantly, meaningful teaching.
